Our Story

Alma Ria designs is a mother (Gayle) daughter (Kaleena) team who enjoy making handcrafted items. Our family lineage includes seamstresses, quilters, and upholsterers and we are proud to continue these creative traditions that have been passed down through the generations.

The name, Alma Ria Designs honors two of our family’s most influential women. Alma, Gayle’s grandmother, was a French speaking farm wife from northern Maine, who mended and repaired everyone’s clothing, then used whatever was unsalvageable to make beautiful braided rugs.

Maria, Kaleena’s grandmother, was an amazing seamstress who created beautiful clothing for her children and grandchildren, some of which has now been passed down to the great grandchildren. She pioneered the family’s immigration from Peru in the 1950’s in hopes of creating a better life for them.

We are proud to stand on the shoulders of these talented women.

“Hi! I’m the daughter of the duo! Originally from Connecticut, I’ve lived in St. Petersburg, FL for the past 12 years with my husband and two young boys.

After the birth of my youngest son, I was suddenly furloughed from a career in travel that I adored and switched to full time stay at home mom mode. I started to lean into my creative hobbies (baking and sewing primarily) as a way to channel my nervous energy. Now that I'm back to work full-time, my creative outlets are more important than ever.

I love how my city has long been a huge supporter of small and local businesses. When the opportunity came up to start our own small business with my mom, I jumped at the opportunity!

My hope is that you love our products as much as I love making them!”

"I’m Gayle, the mom of the duo. I was born in northern Maine, spent most of my life in Connecticut, and retired to Florida.

I have had a lot of roles in my lifetime: childcare worker, teacher, wife, and mother, however my most exciting and fulfilling role has definitely been that of grandmother or “mamita” as my little cherubs call me. Nothing brings me more joy than interacting with my four grandchildren!

My favorite pastimes have always been gardening, especially herbs, and handcrafting, especially sewing. Over the years, Kaleena has had some creative, and sometimes challenging, projects she needed me to execute. I've always tried to magically fulfill her vision from medieval prom dresses, to all sorts of costumes and home projects.

Eventually we started sewing together, creating both fun and practical items. This led us to launch Alma Ria Designs. It certainly has been rewarding to spend time doing something I love with someone I love!"
